MIAMI SLALOM OPEN / PWA YOUTH 2024


Event Report:

Event Overview: The Miami Slalom Open / PWA Youth 2024, held from October 23-27, 2024, was a resounding success, attracting over 50 participants and featuring more than 22 thrilling races. This premier windsurfing event, presented by Jefferies and organized by Tillo International Sports LLC, showcased the best young windsurfers from around the globe against the stunning backdrop of Miami.

Race Format Details:

  • (SLALOM) Downwind slalom windsurfing race, 2 to 5 jibes finishing at the beach
  • Equipment: 
  • OPEN Adult Class (no equipment limitation)
  • YOUTH PWA (Details below)
  • Wind minimum: 
  • (Fin) 11 MPH at the start (race will be canceled if the leader stops planing for 30 seconds)
  • (Foil) 8 MPH at the start (race will be canceled if the leader stops planing for 30 seconds)
  • 10 is the maximum number of races per day per class, minimum of 3 to complete the championship
  • Rules:  starts and scoring per ISAF and the Sailing Instructions, Rule 18 as amended by Appendix B

Classes: (minimum of 5 sailors to have a class)

  • Youth Fin (U13, U15, U17, U21) PWA YOUTH WORLD TOUR
  • Youth Foil (U13, U15, U17, U21) PWA YOUTH WORLD TOUR
  • Adults Fin (Open no equipment limited)
  • Adult Foil (Open no equipment limited)
  • Free Ride Fin (no camber sail)
  • Green Fleet and Intermediated (All equipment will be provided by TILLO International)

    Details:
  • Green Fleet
  • Objective: Develop basic skills and build confidence.
  • Course: Beach start, sail to the outside mark, execute a jibe, and return to the beach.
  • Gear:
    • Boards: Tillo ONE
    • Sail Sizes: Cadet 1.5, 2.2, 3.0
    • Rotation: 5 sailors at a time
  • Intermediate Fleet
  • Objective: Refine skills and tackle more complex maneuvers.
  • Course: Beach start, extended course, likely a triangle, to practice advanced techniques finishing at the beach
  • Gear:
    • Boards: Tillo ONE
    • Sail Sizes: 5.8, 6.4, 7.0
    • Rotation: 7 sailors at a time.

Equipment Limitations
FIN SLALOM: 3 boards, 5 sails (max. board width 85cm, max sail size 9.0 m2)
FOIL SLALOM: 2 boards, 3 sails (max. board width 91cm, max sail size 9.0 m2)

Competitors in the under21division may only use boards and sails from the PWA registered equipment lists,
which can be found HERE
Any exceptions to these rules must be approved in advanced in writing by the PWA.

Age Divisions
YOUTH-a competitor under 21years of age on the 31st December 2024.
JUNIOR U17- a competitor under 17 years of age on the 31st December, 2024.
JUNIOR U15-a competitor under 15 years of age on the 31st December,2024.
JUNIOR U13-a competitorunder13yearsofageonthe31stDecember,2024.

A minimum of 5 competitors is required to open a division. If too few entries are received in a particular
division then competitors may take part but may be merged with another division.
Mandatory Safety Equipment
All competitors in the Slalom discipline must wear a suitable helmet and impact vest. The helmet must
provide protection to the head and the impact vest must provide protection for the upper torso. Items
required under this rule must be commercially available products designed for the purpose. In the event of
any doubt about the suitability of protective equipment under these rules, the PWA Race Committee shall
have the final decision.

Oct 27  :
